Algorithms are Nuts

Ah, Sunday. Wedged on the couch with my dogs, holding a nice big mug of hot tea, I scroll through my phone reading the news and today its heavy on the entertainment. Ugh. Thomas Markle is at it again, Kim and Kanye are having another kid, (should I get another dog to compete), and wait a minute: what are all these diet links in my freaking news feed?! I didn’t resolve to go on a diet! I don’t do resolutions. ALGORITHMS!!! (Yes I raised my fist and shook it like Abe Simpson does at clouds)

Well this is actually a result of me looking at an article about the Mediterranean diet. I wasn’t looking at it because I’m searching for a new diet, it was the breakfast options that caught my attention. Seriously, I want easy, quick, convenient breakfast that I don’t have to make in the morning and doesn’t always need to involve massive carbs or eggs. (I like eggs, I just don’t want to prepare them before going to work). If you have any suggestions, I am all ears!

The main reason I stopped doing diets is because they aren’t balanced. I had success on South Beach but found it difficult to maintain and Atkins and I didn’t see eye to eye. However when my Blood Pressure spiked years ago I started following what is commonly known as the DASH diet. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. The DASH diet is a lifelong approach to healthy eating that’s designed to help treat or prevent high blood pressure. It’s a lifestyle plan that many doctors recommend and can be found here. Yes, I have lost weight on it as well. Most importantly it sparked a complete overhaul on the way that I cook.

Now I focus on vegetables, lots of vegetables, lean proteins, and complex carbs. I do my best to stay away from processed carbs and breads. Ok no one stands between me and sourdough bread, I just eat it less frequently. Bagels and Cream Cheese are now a treat and not something I have on a daily basis. None of this happened overnight. I made one small change and didn’t introduce a new change until the first one became a habit.

No matter where you are in your journey, don’t be too hard on yourself, we all struggle. Just take it one step at a time. Now, I’m going to fix my algorithm so I don’t have to see so many diet ads and articles. I need my entertainment distractions on the weekends.
